Political Shocker: New Indy Mayor
It's The Taxes Stupid!
to find out that the incumbent Democrat, Bart Peterson was upset by Republican Greg Ballard. This is quite an upset considering Ballard is a political newcomer and the GOP didn't want to field any 'viable' candidates because Peterson had this race in the bag. While the pols seemed to indicate a narrowing race it was still widely believed that Peterson would be re-elected for a 4th term. But at the end of the day, property taxes sealed Peterson's fate. Apparently, you can't force people to sell their homes in order to pay their property taxes. Hmmm.
I suppose
that as downtown Indianapolis becomes more gentrified the Dems will continue to lose ground. If I were eligible to vote in the Indy elections I'm not sure who I would have voted for. I don't think Peterson is doing a bad job but I do have a disdain for politicos that play the race card - of which Peterson has done more than once. The other interesting thing is that the council also has swung from Dem to GOP majority.

I'm with you - living in a suburb, this stuff hasn't affected me. It was really odd to drive down Meridian and see big yellow signs stating: "For Sale Due to Unfair Taxation"
it's going to be interesting.
It's quite surprising that an increasingly liberal city has elected a republican mayor and majority council. Needless to say - there are some pissed off people over in Indy.
The prostitutes and dealers are being forced out of their neighborhoods it appears.
