At least one person with ties to Apple has read my iPhone Sucks post. I was bitch slapped by PM for 'Apple' trashing. What? I'm not Apple trashing - far from it.
With regard to the Applegasms that alot of us had on Tuesday... Was it good for you?
Why does the iPhone suck?
While the device currently known as iPhone is a game changing device, the branding sucks. Please allow me to explain.
Think about it.
Isn't the name iPhone a rather bland, uninspiring
name for such a effing sexy, technology forward device? This device deserves a 'historic'
name, not a borrowed generic name. How boring is iPhone as a name?
So, I am to believe that a device that makes calls, IMs, browses the web, delivers the news, licks your toes, plays music, stores pictures of last Saturday night's debauchery, and gives directions is going to be called an 'iPhone' ... ? I just don't think so man, I just don't think so.
Apple apparently does not
have the right to the trade name 'iPhone', rather Cisco owns that name. It appears that both companies had an agreement but something fell through and it was never a closed deal.
Since you asked,
here's my take on how the next 6 months might play out. You know how I love to fan the flames with baseless (breathless?) speculation so here goes:
- Apple does not intend to use the name 'iPhone' when the product actually goes to market
- A good amount of media coverage will ensue as these two classic Silicon Valley companies slug it out
- Apple sends Cisco a nice check for using the name during MacWorld and in promotions that may or may not run
- Apple decides to brand their device as a more progressive, technology forward consumer device
I don't know what
will happen, but the device currently known as the Apple iPhone deserves a unique brand name. Mac and iPod are unique names - don't borrow from them.
Christmas MacWorld keynote is today... 12 EST.
Hmmm...
I've been snooping around the internets today and have been putting together some bits and pieces.
Apple just released an
iChat update that updates the encryption used for syncing. Well encryption and compression technologies are closely linked and I think there is more to this iChat update than meets the eye.
My take:
The new and soon to be released iPhone will have video conferencing built in that works with iChat.
